NOTE: All "Act-Scene-Line" references are based on the New Folger Library editions published by Washington Square Press, which we recommend for study by high school and middle school students. The reference III.2.113-115 would mean Act III, Scene 2, Lines 113-115.

  1. Looking forward to the trip this summer. Any idea about the dates and plays for next summer's homeschool trip?

    1. The Festival has announced their plays but not yet the day-to-day schedule for 2013, so I can't really choose even the plays yet until I see (1) when they're scheduled, (2) which we could see in a two-day period, etc. Blog readers and previous participants will be the first to know! I try to have a tragedy and a comedy every year, and King Lear is the only tragedy, so it's a likely choice. Cymbeline is a fascinating play from late in the Bard's career and would be well worth seeing. But the two pure comedies are both so good we'd just about have to see one of them if the calendar works out. They are Midsummer Night's Dream and Taming of the Shrew!

  2. I would dearly love to come on the trip this year but I'll have a newborn baby to tend to and that doesn't mix well with live performances. Thankfully, I was able to attend the 2011 trip (Julius Caesar & Love's Labor's Lost) and had a marvelous time. SO glad that my daughter and I were able to go. This year I plan to send her and my younger son and I expect I'll hear great reports!

  3. You'll be missed, but your son will be a welcome addition to the trip. Congrats in advance on the new baby, a future Ashland traveller, I suppose! Blessings... Genial Host Norm

So, what is the lower age limit on attending your summer seminar?

    2. I feel like students entering 9th grade in the fall are probably the low end of the appropriate age group. Possible exception: younger ones with an older sibling and at least one parent attending. Thanks for asking! Got any homegrown scholars ready for the trip?

  4. Norm,
I have one next year and more to follow. Any ideas which plays next year?

    1. We know which plays will be performed, but don't yet know the schedule. That might be another couple of months. I like to choose a ccmedy and a tragedy, one outdoors and one indoors if possible. Two combinations that could turn out that way: Cymbeline and Taming of the Shrew, or King Lear and Midsummer Night's Dream.
